HOKKAIDO GARDEN SHOW -www.hgs.co.jp- June 2, 2012 - October 8 Hokkaido Garden Show Executive Committee

We present new styles of gardens from Tokachi, Hokkaido, in 2012

Unlike a showy garden show produced by big businesses in big cities, this garden show is being created and nurtured with patience and care in the rich, natural environment of Hokkaido. The gardens enhance each other's charm and together make one coherent whole. Through dialogues between the gardens and people, we propose new roles for gardens in the future. At the same time we are presenting pre-events and other hands-on programs for the people in our community. We are also holding a competition that provides a gateway for young garden designers. Through such events, we hope to gradually foster garden culture and a new generation of garden designers.
It is a garden show surrounded by the clear streams and natural broad leaf forests of the northland. We are convinced that this garden show will present a new appeal for gardens.

The Overall Structure of the Garden Show

Four Theme Gardens

The four large theme gardens have been cultivated by the Tokachi Millennium Forest for many years. Three of the gardens were designed with natural themes, one each for "the earth," "the forest," and "wild flowers," and one with the theme of "agriculture," which is important to the relationship between people and the natural environment. The four gardens were made by leading designers of the east and the west, namely, Dan Pearson, an internationally renowned garden designer, and Takano Landscape Planning, a company of landscape architects. Please come and enjoy the spacious and relaxing Hokkaido gardens, which utilize the power of the earth to causes geological changes.

Four Designer Gardens and Art Installations

The four invited designers, Haruki Shirai, Koichiro Nakatani, Hitoshi Taketani, and Dan Pearson, will display their full skills in a broadleaved forest of water oaks and Japanese elms over 70 years old, where the clear streams murmur. Each designer has chosen their respective favorite site, and is now developing an idea for the design. The art installations,Nobuho Nagasawa, will be exhibited in the Forest Garden. Please look forward to seeing what the collaborations of the artists with the Forest Garden can produce.

Competition Gardens: Seven Small Gardens in the Forest and Goats' Playgarden

Competition GardensWe ask that the competition gardens be designed with a creative mind free from conventional concepts of what a garden should be. We would like not only garden designers but also people of various fields such as landscape architects, artists, architects, and fashion designers, to join the competition. The theme for the Seven Small Gardens in the Forest is Garden for Love. Interpret this theme as you will, and express it as a "garden." Many goats are put out to pasture in the Farm Garden. Please give these goats a "playgarden." The natural behavior and tastes of goats should be taken into consideration for the design. The competition is to be announced officially in the beginning of February, 2011.

Exchange with Garden Lovers

This Garden Show will be completed over the course of one year. During that period, many garden lovers will be able to enjoy exchange with eminent garden designers. Workshops and the Garden Academy, where you can directly learn from the designers, are planned as preevents.

Events Held in the Gardens

Since ancient times, gardens have accommodated various events such as tea parties, haiku poetry gatherings, banquets, concerts, and dances. These events, together with gardens themselves, have cultivated the garden culture. Hokkaido Garden Show also plans to hold diverse events in the gardens.
