GARDEN MAP

The Tokachi Millennium Forest, the site of the Hokkaido Garden Show is an environmental resort located in Shimizu, Tokachi, which is located approximately in the center of Hokkaido. It has four different types of gardens designed by world-famous garden designer Dan Pearson: the Earth Garden, where you can feel the earth breath, the Meadow Garden, where wildflowers bloom in full glory, the Forest Garden, where the latent strengths of the forest are utilized, and the Farm Garden, where agricultural activities are also performed. All these four gardens are of magnificent scale and are pioneering places you can enjoy no matter how many times you visit. Also, works by seven globally renowned, spirited contemporary artists, including Yoko Ono, from inside and outside Japan, are placed around the Forest. You can also enjoy a Segway tour around the hills and fields, which is the first in Japan, as well as horseback riding and petting goats. Chèvre (goat milk cheese), which is rarely produced in Japan and other foods produced with special care given to their healthiness and safety, are other attractions of the Forest. The Tokachi Millennium Forest is a place where you can appreciate the entire spectrum of nature in Tokachi.
Four Theme Gardens
A paradise of the wild flowers of Hokkaido
Dan Pearson was inspired by the beauty of Tokachi's native flora and the landscape ranging
from forest to grassland, and created this garden. In order to find flowers that match the site,
he thoroughly investigated the natural environment and nursery. Then he drew a detailed
planting pattern for the selected flowers. Strolling on the path made of wooden crossties, you
can feel the harmony of nature as you enjoy the carpet of wild flowers.
A garden that has drawn on the potential of the forest
A forest that had not been cared for many years, one of those rough forests that you can find
anywhere in Hokkaido, has been slowly worked on for more than 10 years to be the Forest
Garden. It is a slow-design garden. Nothing is taken from and nothing is taken into the forest.
The garden is "designed by subtraction," that is, the garden has been developed only by cutting
bamboo grass and thinning trees. Reading the power of the land by geomancy, and based on
the characteristics of one of the world's three beech zones, we have created an area of forestal
culture. Enjoy the garden that has drawn on the potential of the forest
Magic of the Earth
13 grass hills undulate through the vast five-hectare land, which was originally a flat land.
This garden of generous scale, which was inspired by the form of the Hidaka Mountain Range,
gently leads people out into nature. The beautiful light of Tokachi emphasizes the shadows
made by the land form, and you can observe the landscape as it changes from moment to
moment. The figures of people strolling around appear and disappear among the series of hills.
The magic of the earthwork has produced a space filled with a sense of joy.
The garden combined with farming
In this garden, farming is practiced as an activity to live together with nature. It is a place
where visitors can see the connection between agriculture, food and gardens. The Kitchen
Garden is the point where the agricultural landscape and food come together. The vegetables
and herbs not only provide the stuff of life but also entertain you with the forms of their
flowers and fruits. In the Goat Farm, you can interact with goats grazing grass contentedly at
the foot of the Hidaka Mountain Range, and see the peaceful agricultural landscape so typical
of Tokachi, Hokkaido.
